    Have a Summah!

As we do every year on TRS, we started our Summer Movie Wager this week, where we try to predict the top ten grossing blockbusters of the Summer... in order!  Scoring is based on how close to the correct position you place each movie.  We also get 3 "dark horse" candidates, which get a point if they appear anywhere in the top ten.

    Here is my official list:

    1) Transformers: Dark of the Moon

    2) Cars 2

    3) Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides

    4) Hangover 2

    5) Harry Potter: Deathly Hallows pt 2

    6) Super 8

    7) Kung Fu Panda 2

    8) Thor

    9) Cowboys & Aliens

    10) Fast Five

Dark Horses:  Green Lantern, Captain America, X-Men: First Class

So, there you have it!  Again, these aren't my favorite movies, or my most anitcipated movies, but rather the ones I think will make the most money.  Play along, or tell me where I'm wrong in the comments below.  And have a great summah!

Here is the episode where we throw down with Peter Sciretta from /Film:

I think you placed Harry Potter too low, it should be in the top 3.

I think Harry Potter will be this summers big winner. It's the last movie of the series, and it looks action-packed based on the new trailer. Transformers 3 will do it great as well, only because the visuals are amazing. I have faith in Green Lantern, and I think it will do it pretty good, its the only DC movie, versus the 3 marvel movies. I put Cars 2 high up, mostly because Pixar is a winner. Cars 2 isn't the same as Toy Story 3, or Wall-E, and it probably have a higher percentage of kids than the last Pixar movies.

    1. Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows: Part 2
    2. Transformers: Dark Of The Moon
    3. Pirates Of The Carribean: On Stranger Tides
    4. Cars 2
    5. Green Lantern
    6. The Hangover: Part II
    7. Kung Fu Panda 2
    8. Super 8
    9. Fast Five
    10. X-Men: First Class

    Dark Horses:
    Thor
    Captain America
    Cowboys & Aliens

I think everyone is underestimating the power of Pixar and Dreamworks. Looking at last year, Toy Story 3 was a GREAT movie, but it did a lot of business because kids wanted to see it... A LOT. And parents have to buy tickets for themselves also. I've got two young sons and I pretty much have to see every animated kids movie that comes out with my kids, or they drive me crazy with their badgering. And when a kids movie comes out that has a lot of quality and enjoyability for adults, well then I (and the hundreds of thousands of other parents out there) are even more apt to see the movie with our kids... even multiple times.

    so my top 10 is

    1) Cars 2 (You can't stop the Pixar machine)

    2) Kung Fu Panda 2 (My kids most anticipated movie of the summer)

    3) Transformers: Dark of the Moon (America LOVES to get stupid and smile at the big shiny things)

    4) Harry Potter 7 (Kind of for kids, kind of big stupid and shiny, kind of a good story)

    5) Hangover 2 (It's a kids movie for adults)

    6) Pirates of the Carribean 4 (Would be higher, but this one almost seems like the Crystal Skull... They've told their story in three solid parts, now they're looking for one last cash grab)

    7) Green Lantern (The highest on the list that is NOT a sequel... Very sad)

    8) Thor (Being the first big budget "popcorn" movie of the summer will give it some juice)

    9) Fast Five (Vin Diesel vs. The Rock... This one gets some action when all the boyfriends and husbands out there say "We went to see Water for Elephants last time. Now I get to pick.")

    10) Smurfs (The kid thing again. This looks TERRIBLE... But I know I'll see it because my kids will want to.

Dark Horses: Super 8, Cowboys & Aliens, Captain America

Good list, Jeff, but I'm skeptical about Pirates of the Caribbean doing that well. I'm sensing fatigue for that franchise. Word of mouth will need to be really good. Also, I think you're underestimating Thor a little. It's going to surprise people. Coming early in the summer, it's in the right spot to pull in Iron Man numbers.
